Skyfall, more Homestuck,
Aug. 7th, 2013 07:14 pm Well, this weekend has been crazy.
The annual summer theraputic riding benefit at my barn is officially wrapped up. Just helped load the last of the tables and jump rails and things into the truck this Monday, and they've been carted off to their respective places. A lot of people came, the demonstrations all went well. Pony and Horse Quadrille both looked amazing. They're kind of like horsey drill teams and they're made up of horses and riders from our barn. A lot of my friends were in them and so were some of my favorite schoolies. Pony Quadrille's theme was Star Wars, and Horse Quadrille's was the Great Gatsby. Horse Quadrille was probably my favorite. One of my favorite grooms/Horse Camp instructors was directing it for the first time, and I was always feeding while they were practicing, so I was kind of invested.
Also they used one of the songs from the Great Gatsby soundtrack in it, "A Little Party Never Killed Nobody," and now it's stuck in everyone's head for the rest of their lives.
I basically spent the weekend at the barn getting ready, so I came out very tired. Also sunburned. The day before was fun, too, though, we all were just sitting around at the picnic table in front cleaning tack and even though we started out very productive by the end a couple of people were dancing on tables trying to rap. Then yesterday we had our annual volunteer appreciation party, which consists of horsey relay races and food which are both very good in my book. It was just a really nice way to kind of wind down the summer.
I didn't get as much writing done this summer as I wanted, but then again, I never do. I usually get more done during the school year, because in the summer my mom's off work and wants to do stuff, there's barn stuff going on, friends want to hang out more, and it's just generally busier. On the other hand, I don't get anything done in the winter, either, so it's not like my writing schedule changes.
I do find that I can finish oneshots and post them, whereas trying to write multichapter things just become NO I'M GONNA WORK ON THIS ONESHOT/I SHOULD REVISE THAT/OH GEEZ PLOT HOLE GODDAMNIT. However I'm still trying to plug ahead with my Glee multichapter thing, even when I'd rather finish one of my songfics. I kind of stopped for a while because part of the plot involves some characters dying/appearing to be dead/possibly dead and is just stung way too much. It still feels really wrong to write any parts that refer to a character being dead, though, so I've skipped around quite a bit.
I've read enough Homestuck fic that I feel like I know how they're typically portrayed in fandom, which kind of helps me just as much as seeing how they're portrayed in canon. I like to read some good fic, some really good fic, some average fic, some badfic, some cliched fic, and then go back to part of the canon and see what holds up/what happens. It's kind of cool how fandom can condense characters to this quick little cliche shorthand character that can show up for just a few scenes and be immediately identifiable, and then go and unpack the same character in detail.
Also I really want to write Rose/Kanaya but I don't feel like I have a handle on Kanaya AT ALL, which is kind of irritating but mostly is just sad.
Also, I finally saw Skyfall! I've been wanting to see it for a while, so I was excited when my friend rented it for a sleepover. I really enjoyed it. Oh my god MoneyPenny is SO HOT and her accent welp. Q was also awesome, and M was so steely eyed and just. LADY M IS PERF OKAY. It was kind of annoying because around the part when Silva has Bond tied up my friends who'd seen it started going, "oh my GOD THIS PART IS SO CREEPY ewww WHY Bond isn't really gay, right?"
And I was sitting there like SHH I WANT TO HEAR but they were all screaming so it didn't work.
Also it made me like the Adele song even more. The sequence when they played that song at the start of the film kind of mesmerized me.
We were also going to watch Pitch Perfect, which I wanted to see even more (ESTER DEAN AS A LESBIAN SINGING S&M I HEARD THAT WAS A THING THAT HAPPENED), but we were all too tired and we went to sleep instead.
